· Igreja de Sao Lourenco de Matos
Located in Almancil this marvelous church was built when local people implored the help of the Saint for help and struck water. The design of the church is inspiring.
· Tavira
The beautiful and elegant architecture of the homes along the Rio Gilao has inspired tourists brochures to refer to Tavira as the Venice of the Algarve. This historical jewel of the Golden Triangle is overlooked by castle ruins with 16th to 18th century buildings and numerous churches. Tavira is 3 kilometers from the coast and near the beaches on Ilha de Tavira.
The Igreja da Misericordia is the Algarve's most important Renaissance monument. The carved work must be seen to be believed.
· Castelo
This sandstone castle overlooks the town and countryside providing an impressive panoramic vista for souvenir photos. Built between the 8th and 13th centuries it combines both Christian and Muslim period architecture. The Muslim period is highlighted by a deep rosy colored water cistern over 5 meters deep from the 12th century. The cisterns four vaults are supported by ten columns. By the 16th century the castle itself was abandoned.
· Monchique
In the forests of the Serra de Monchique, this incredible little town is a great place for open-air activities like hiking, horse back riding, or bicycling. If you ask around there is a woodland spa and a private endangered species zoo.
Monchique is also home to the famous medronho. Medronho is the locally made distilled liquor made from the arbutus (Strawberry tree). If trying the local flavor is truly what you are into, this is an experience in itself!
· The sé
No site seeing holiday would be complete without visiting the sé. Built in the 13th century, Its construction was built over by numerous cultures. Originally it is thought the site was a Roman temple. The Visigoths constructed a cathedral over it. In the Moorish period, the Muslims built a Mosque over the cathedral.
In 1755 most of the structure was destroyed. Only the tower gate and a few of the chapels remained. It was rebuilt in Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque styles combined!
It is replete with intricate gilded carvings and tilework. Views from the rooftop are clear to the sea.
The other structure worth noting is the Museu Capitular which houses sacred artifacts and a small shrine made of bones to remind the faithful about the afterlife.
